Cineon is thrilled to collaborate with Devon and Cornwall Police and Future Skills Centre Exeter  to develop an immersive, data-driven drone training programme. Designed specifically for search and rescue operations, the training leverages Virtual Reality (VR) and in-headset eye-tracking to build decision-making, situational awareness, and technical flying skills – all within a controlled and repeatable environment.

Why VR for Drone Training?

Traditional drone training can be limited by environmental unpredictability and operational risk. VR offers a safe, repeatable and cost-effective alternative:

  1. Realistic Simulations: Operators can practise in a wide range of simulated weather conditions and navigate flying hazards in a safe environment.
  2. Reduced Risk and Cost: Training in VR eliminates the need to use physical drones during practice, reducing wear and tear and the potential for accidents.

The Role of Eye-Tracking

While flying a drone competently is essential, success in search and rescue missions depends heavily on human factors like:

  • Workload management
  • Situational awareness
  • Communication skills

Eye-tracking technology provides two key benefits:

  • Understanding Expertise: By analysing gaze patterns, we can identify what experts focus on during challenging scenarios.
  • Coaching Desired Behaviours: Operators can receive real-time feedback on their gaze strategies, helping them develop better situational awareness and decision-making skills.

The Technology Behind the Training

This drone training programme is being developed for the HP Omnicept VR headset, equipped with Tobii eye-tracking. This state-of-the-art combination enables highly immersive and data-driven training experiences that are tailored to the needs of drone operators.

The Future of Drone Training

This collaboration highlights Cineon’s commitment to enhancing safety and performance in critical sectors. By leveraging VR and eye-tracking, we aim to set a new standard for drone training that prioritises both technical competence and human factors.
