From Training Delivered to Performance Understood: Reflections from WATS 2026

Attending WATS 2026 in Florida made one thing clear: aviation training is entering a new phase.

The conversation has moved beyond how training is delivered and towards a more fundamental question. How do we truly understand performance?

Across the event, discussions consistently returned to insight rather than infrastructure. AI, adaptive learning and emerging technologies are advancing at pace, but their real value depends on the quality of data and understanding behind them. Without objective insight, even the most sophisticated tools risk reinforcing assumptions rather than revealing reality.

Throughout the conference, our Business Development Lead, Ben Boness, identified several recurring themes, including the ongoing evolution of instructor standardisation, CBTA and EBT. However, despite progress across these frameworks, one issue consistently surfaced as unresolved: the lack of objective performance measurement. Again and again, speakers and delegates highlighted the gap between perceived confidence and actual performance, reinforcing the need for deeper, behaviour‑led understanding.

The strongest signal from WATS 2026 was a growing demand for better behavioural insight. Not just what pilots know, but how they behave under pressure, where their attention goes, and how decisions are really made in complex environments.

This is where Cineon plays a critical role. Powered by our Empathic Learning Engine (ELE), which is built upon many years of academic and industrial research, Cineon transforms eye-tracking and movement data into objective insight on how pilots actually perform. From attention and decision-making to behaviour under pressure, we provide a clearer, evidence-based view of performance that traditional training methods cannot access.

The opportunity facing the industry now is to move from training delivered to performance understood.

If you want to explore how measurable performance insight can strengthen pilot training and assessment, we would love to continue the conversation. Get in touch to learn more.
